Due to the unique flexibility of the LIZARD® technology there are numerous engineering
and laboratory applications for which the system can be employed. Whether it be for
topside weld inspection, rail rolling stock wheel evaluation or a sub sea ROV mounted
custom built pick and place array there is a LIZARD® system to suit.

Above-Rail point (switchblade) inspection using Lizard FGI probe
Among the uses for the method are the following:
- Highly accurate and repeatable detection and sizing of flaws either if these are
crack like defects or areas of material property change without the requirement for
physical crack measurement to establish length or depth
- Material Sorting
- Identification of heat-affected areas
- Coating thickness measurements
- Electrical conductivity measurements for material property assessment
- Very detailed inspection in intricate and very tight areas, typically aerospace and
ferritic box section corners

Electromagnetic testing has a number of advantages compared with other methods used
to detect cracks. Among these are the following:
- The method is quick to use, due to high inspection speeds
- Minimum surface preparation required even for sub sea where fouling requires only
wire brush and scraper for the removal of heavy marine growth thereby preserving
costly protective coatings
- The method does not require direct contact between the test probe and the test object,
which means among other things that the method can be used over painted or non conductive
heavily protective surfaces such as glass fibre, epoxy, bitumen etc.
- The method can also inspect through many metallic coatings including flame sprayed
aluminium and zinc dip.
- It is also possible to use the method under water.
- It can be used where there is poor access for visual inspection.
- The method is inexpensive to use for there are no consumable materials used and therefore
entirely environmentally friendly.
- In applications such as food processing and the pharmaceutical industry the method
can be used very successfully within a bio clean environment
