Railtrack has searched the world for technology to provide the highest quality inspection capability for asset management of track. NEWT International Limited is already a world leader in electro-magnetic array products for the inspection of structures in the oil and gas industry. With their revolutionary LIZARD® field gradient crack detection and sizing products, NEWT International Limited have proven the feasibility of real-time defect imaging with technology developed under a DTI SMART Award: "LIZARD® Field Gradient Imaging Camera". On the eve of the Millennium Product Award, David Ventry, Head of Track Asset Management at Railtrack, has entered into a Letter of Intent to support development work towards the railway environment. This project is to be managed by David Cooper in Railtrack Asset Management, who identified the technology and potential solutions to specific problems. Mr. Michael Bentley of NEWT International says that this British technology allows LIZARD® to enter the new Millennium with the capability of presenting television-like simple pictures of any flaws that may be found in engineering structures such as rails, tankers, oil rigs, fish farms, etc. It can see through paint, corrosion, oil and grime layers of 5-10 mm. The whole inspection of many miles of track can be stored on DVD giving the perfect tool for asset management.
